Travel insurance 'often inadequate'

Saturday, April 03, 2010 Gary Noakes

Travel insurance policies are often inadequate when it comes to situations such as missed flights and terrorism, a Which? Holiday survey has found.

Eighty policies were surveyed by the magazine for their ability to offer help with six scenarios. These included missed departure caused by the holidaymaker’s own car breaking down or being stuck in traffic, scheduled airline failure, a strike, a terrorist incident and the collapse of a ground supplier such as a car hire.

Which? Holiday's research showed that only 18% of policies treated terrorism as something that could invoke clauses covering damage to personal property and medical care. Covered by insure2travel as standard.

It also found that:

  • Just over half of policies would cover clients for a missed flight if they drove themselves to the airport. Covered by insure2travel as standard.

  • However, public transport delays were usually covered and 96% of those surveyed would pay out in case of a vehicle breakdown. Covered by insure2travel as standard.

  • Only 41% included scheduled airline failure protection. Another 14% charged extra for it. Tesco did not provide it but said it would use its discretion. Covered by insure2travel as standard.

  • Dynamic packagers were at risk from the failure of suppliers. Only 14% of insurers would pay out if hotels, ferry companies or other suppliers went bust. Covered by insure2travel as standard!

  • The public were better protected when it came to airline strikes, with 91% of insurers including this in policies. Covered by insure2travel as standard.

Which? Holiday said the industry needed to "act responsibly towards its customers".

"There may be grey areas in some of the six stated scenarios, which travel insurers might be excused for not covering. But we believe there is little justification for excluding acts of terrorism in travel insurance policies and that scheduled airline failure should at least be covered as an optional extra."

Insure2travel policy covers all the above highlighted scenarios, which are often missed from cover according to the Which? Report.
